Statement for Emotes
Since 2009, we have had a partnership with Emotes to field test their material. Candidates in the LMU School Psychology have been using the Emotes program (i.e. story books and follow-up activities) at their practicum and/or internship sites, as part of their counseling work with referred students (GenEd and SpEd). Preliminary program effectiveness data suggests that after a 4-book program (6 – 8 sessions), elementary age students significantly increased their knowledge of emotional vocabulary and responses to written social scenarios. Moreover, our candidates indicate that there is high student engagement with the Emotes material, with the boys particularly excited about the figurines. Observation from candidates also included noticeable changes in several students with autism in their use of words to express their emotions.
Based on data and comments from candidates, it is evident that Emotes books are an effective tool to support students’ social emotional learning for both GenEd and SpEd students, especially at the elementary level. Emotes story books could work well as a “foundation” program to help students develop emotional vocabulary and expressive skills, from which they can springboard to working on subsequent counseling goals.
